Hypoglossal nerve stimulation is a newer treatment for adults with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnoea who struggle with CPAP. It works by gently activating the tongue muscle during sleep to keep the airway open. Evidence from key clinical trials—including the STAR and DREAM studies—shows sustained improvements in daytime symptoms, sleep quality, and oxygen levels for appropriately selected patients.
While it is not suitable for everyone, these trials support hypoglossal nerve stimulation as an effective and durable option within a structured sleep-surgery pathway. I recently visited the Amsterdam Medical Centre to complete dedicated surgical training and have been accredited to offer the Genio implant, a next-generation system in this field. I anticipate being able to provide this treatment at the Lister Hospital from 2026, as part of a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to OSA care.
